How to avoid basement flooding

Basement flooding can be avoided by making sure your eavestroughs and downspouts are not dumping the water too close to your foundation walls which can overload your home's drainage system.  Another cause could be your lot grading, If the ground around your house slopes in towards your foundation then you would have the same problem with overloading your weeping tile and drainage system.  Build up the ground around your house so the water drain away from your house walls.  Sump pumps can help in avoiding a flood in your basement.  Sump pumps collects water from the weeping tiles around your basement walls and push the water outside your house.  For additional protection, a battery powered backup sump pump is a must in case of a power blackout during a heavy rain storm.  CMHC.
